The Marshall Family
Origins ...
The Marshalls dominated the social scene in the small village of
Ulgham (pro. 'Uffam'), near Morpeth, for at least a century. From at
least the mid-18th, if not earlier, to the mid-19th century the family
ran the village forge and the village pub (a common combination).
Although often associated with high office, the name Marshall can also
mean a farrier or shoeing smith and it is likely, since the family has
such close associations with blacksmithing, that this is where the
name originated in our case.
The name is quite common throughout England and Southern Scotland but
the most likely probability is that the Marshalls were born and bred
Northumbrians - quite possibly in the vicinity of Ulgham.
Unfortunately, the parish records cannot take us back beyond circa
1700.
