Individual Note

According to her Great Niece, Hilary Peckett nee Dykes, Hilda never married and was a secretary in London.

However, the marriage of a Hilda J. Almond in Sunderland in 1921 suggests otherwise especially given that there were no other births registered of a Hilda J. Almond anywhere in England or Wales in the late 1800's.

The discrepancy that is most troubling is the date of birth, 1902, given at the death of Hilda Jane Wardhaugh in 1982. However, there was only one Hilda Jane Almond birth registered in the late 19th or early 20th century and that was our Hilda in 1894.

Furthermore, an exhaustive scan of the records confirms almost beyond doubt that our Hilda must have married Ernest Wardhaugh (there is no other potential candidate) and must have died in 1982 (there is no other possible death record)

The marriage and death certificates would be needed to be absolutely certain but the evidence strongly points to the information being correct.⁸
