Individual Note
A family story, according to Johns' Great Great Grandaughter Beattie Stephenson, was that John was either found as a young boy, age 3 or 4, in the arms of a dead man by the side of a dike, or he was travelling on a coach with his father when his father died. All the boy could say was 'Dykes'. Both were very well dressed and had just come or come back from abroad but there was no identification on either. The boy was raised in an orphanage and named Dykes.
However, all the evidence (two census returns and his death certificate) points to him having been born in Heybridge, Essex in about 1804. The International Genealogical Index contains an entry for the christening of a John Dikes in Heybridge in 1804. This suggests that the story is unlikely to be correct ... however it is possible that the family tale actually relates to Johns father, also called John, about whom no information has yet been found.9,10

Surnames given as "Duke" or possibly "Dyke". However, other details of the entries and the consistency of the entries with other documentary evidence strongly suggest that this entry is for the family of John Dykes and Elizabeth (nee Butcher). |
