Individual Note
Eric Davison gives a year of death of 1930 (no source info).
The only potential match in the GRO index is a William Oates age 70 who died in Bradford, Yorkshire in the 1st quarter of 1870 but in the absence of any evidence to connect this William with our William and with the age being one year out I doubt whether there is a connection.
Given the absence of William from the census returns for England after 1881 it is doubtful whether he was resident in England anyway.6
